EVERYDAY: ESTABLISHING A BEDTIME ROUTINE FOR YOUR CHILD

We like to make bath time a family affair at our house. It is one of my favorite times of day for so many reasons.

Besides washing away the grime of the day, we are all spending time together telling stories, laughing and preparing these little hearts in our care for a great night's sleep (and preparing for some down time for mom & dad). Proper rest is the foundation of a healthy, happy household. I am a firm believer that a great bedtime routine is an absolute necessity when it comes to establishing healthy sleep habits. Creating a routine gives a sense of security and stability and benefits all members of the family.

I do think there is a common misconception that you need to be a "Type A" mom to have your kids on a routine or schedule. The truth is that all kids crave it. Even the most laid back, free spirited mom can benefit by having a great bedtime routine in place. You can make a bedtime routine your own and it still be a routine that gives your children some predictability which is so important at these young stages. If you're looking for somewhere to start, we like to start every night with a warm bath followed by a book (or two).

This last hour of the day before their little heads hit the pillow is full of teachable moments and memory makers. Their minds are ripe and ready for gentle reminders from us as parents. We like to tell our kids how much they are loved and how important it is to be kind to others. We have silly time where my oldest loves to run laps around the upstairs like a race car. We read books with stories that will hopefully stick with them for a life time. We take baths with loads of bubbles. I still vividly remember special bath time moments when I was little. My mom always had a bottle of JOHNSON’S® Baby Shampoo on the edge of the tub. They say the sense of smell is closely linked with memory and to this day the smell of that shampoo always reminds me of those special moments as a child. I even remember when I eventually learned how to read that the phrase "no tears" written on the bottle was one of the first things I read.

I love that I can share these memories with my kids with the new and improved JOHNSON’S® products! They are 100% gentle, free of parabens, phthalates, dye and sulfates. We are loving the COTTONTOUCH™ Newborn Wash & Shampoo...it absorbs fast and feels incredibly soft. I also love the pump bottles which makes bathing so much easier when you have your hands full.

I pick ours up at our local Walgreens just around the corner. I love how convenient it is, especially for all those last minute emergencies...like the time I was a brand new mom with a fever-ridden baby that needed medicine in the middle of the night (talk about a whole new kind of anxiety) . And of course there are always those last minute trips for diapers, wipes and all the baby things. I know I can always trust that Walgreens will have just what I need so I don't have to go running around town tracking it down. Right now you can save $1 on any 1 JOHNSON'S® lotion, wash, or hair care item.

What does your bedtime routine look like? Do you have any memories from your childhood centered around your bedtime routines? I'd love for you to share with me on my Instagram @theeverydayexchange!
